Double Dip – Recession – Believe it or Not?

What is causing the sell off in all world markets, today the US market is down 250 points so far,  WHY?

When the market opened it was 120 points down when The Commerce Department reported that sales of new homes collapsed in May sinking 33 percent to the lowest level on record as potential buyers stopped shopping for a home as government tax credits expired.

Then half an hour after the open Consumer Confidence numbers came out at  52.9, down from the revised 62.7 in May, the market quicly lost another 100 points as the VIX rose 17% instantly. That’s the fear index yes the data sent fear and the sellers took action immediately.

Both components of the index—one that measures how consumers feel now about the economy, the other that assesses their outlook over the next six months—dropped. The Present Situation Index decreased to 25.5 in June from 29.8 in May. The Expectations Index declined to 71.2 from 84.6.

Increasing uncertainty and apprehension about the future state of the economy and labor market, no doubt a result of the recent slowdown in job growth, are the primary reasons for the sharp reversal in confidence.

Fears of a  double dip  in the euro zone this will  affect the US economy and spark a further correction in stocks and markets around the globe.

The Labor Department is expected to report on Friday that employers eliminated 110,000 jobs in June, and the jobless rate is expected to tick up slightly to 9.8 percent, from 9.7 percent in May we can expect some more downside we may get a relief rally as the US companies head into their reporting earnings season starting with the big bellwether stock Alcoa on the 12th July all eyes will be on them.

    The Health of the Markets

These are symptoms of a market in trouble

On Monday, the S&P 500 pushed above 1,120 to trigger stop-losses of the short-sellers.

Then the bulls rushed in … only to have the market suddenly collapse under their feet back under 1,120 then 1,100.

So are you bullish … bearish … or confused? I’ll tell you what I think:

This behaviour and other recent incidents like the recent “flash crash,” on May 6th are not symptoms of a healthy market.

Have a look at a monthly chart of the S&P 500

    SP500 with Fibonacci

This chart shows Fibonacci retracements, common support and resistance lines used by technical analysts. The market bumped its head on overhead resistance and seems headed lower. Now, it doesn’t have to be a straight line. But you can bet that traders are looking at this chart and weighing it with poor fundamental news.

What fundamental news? I’m talking about stubbornly high unemployment … weakening retail sales … building permits falling off a cliff … decreasing mortgage applications …

This is the kind of news that will cause the S&P 500 and broad market to slide lower.

In this scary market, where should you be investing right now?

I don’t know if we’re in the early stages of a Depression. I do know that a lot of fuel for the U.S. market rally off the March 2009 lows came from the United States borrowing and spending $1.5 trillion a year, or 11% of GDP, for the last two years!

There’s a word for that kind of borrowing: Unsustainable! The markets may be coming to that conclusion. Along with worries over Europe, that could be one reason why the S&P 500 lost 10% of its value in just a month!

The good news is you can make money in a falling market — using put options, yes for every dollar a stock falls is a dollar profit in your pocket.

You can start with a little as a few hundred dollars.

I think you need to be careful if you are long-term trading or investing.

Ask yourself what stocks and funds you want to hold for the long term. Are they in your portfolio now? Are you holding some “losers” hoping they’ll come back? Maybe you should put that money to better use elsewhere, because come-back time may be a long way off.

It may be time to take profits on those holdings while they are there or

Did you know that you can insure your stocks yes with Put options just like the insurance we have on our cars if your car is worth less than your portfolio and you have no insurance on your portfolio, why are you taking unnecessary risk?

You may think you are a safe driver but what about the other drivers on the road we can’t control.

Is China preparing itself for a Worldwide Currency Collapse?

Interesting news today the China Banking Regulatory Commission has tightened capital requirements for overseas lending on a country by country basis, the rate varies between 0.5% and 50% I am really keen to get my hands on that list!

This follows on from a directive last August to tighten capital requirements after there was an explosion in lending volume in Jan-Mar 2009.

The Chinese as I can see are acknowledging that there is an ongoing financial crisis and are prepared to be honest about it, this philosophy will bode them well in the coming years.

    Bloodwood Tree can Cure Cancer

    Hi Traders,
We are always looking out for new opportunities and this looks like a good opportunity not only financially but for humankind as a whole.
I have always been of the belief that we are headed down the wrong track with pharmaceuticals and this seems to be testament to that.

Goldman Sachs is still under fire

    Hi fellow traders,
I have just finished watching a great documentary on the ABC about how Goldman Sachs sold a Hedge Fund here in Australia $100million of toxic CDO’s after they new that they were junk.
Marian Wilkinson shows the trail of destruction this has left for many Australian Investors, it leaves many more questions unanswered including why the Australian Government Regulatory Body ASIC has not done anything about it, it just reinforces to me the importance of getting yourself informed of what is going on in the world.

You can watch the episode on the ABC website http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/special_eds/20100614/debt/
